St. Mark, a companion of both Saints Peter and Paul (1Pet 5:13, Col 4:10), probably wrote this Gospel around the year 70 AD, soon after the Roman Empire martyred these two apostles and destroyed the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. This timing makes Mark’s Gospel the earliest of the four and suggests that it probably reflects his memory of Peter’s eyewitness account.
