Introduction
St. Mark, a companion of both Saints Peter and Paul (Acts 12:11-12, 25, 1 Peter 5:13, Colossians 4:10), probably wrote this Gospel around the year 70 AD, soon after the Roman Empire had martyred these two apostles and destroyed the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. This timing makes Mark’s Gospel the earliest of the four and suggests that it probably reflects his memory of Peter’s eyewitness account. It is also the shortest of the four Gospels, making it a good introduction to the main character of the whole Bible, Jesus Christ. I have written this paraphrase of Mark’s Gospel in a style that emphasizes his sense of immediacy and attention to detail in an effort to draw the reader into the story’s quick action and drama.
